Happy Tuesday,

Retail technology investment is increasingly shifting from experimentation to infrastructure. Walmart is committing approximately $6 billion to expand distribution center automation, Ahold Delhaize USA is modernizing its point-of-sale and self-checkout environments, and Runnings is deploying AI-powered forecasting across its stores and distribution centers. These developments illustrate a broader industry priority: connecting technology investments directly to inventory availability, labor productivity and customer experience.

Cybersecurity also moved to the forefront Monday after suspected attacks disrupted supermarket refrigeration systems across several European countries. The incidents demonstrate that retail technology risk extends well beyond payment systems and customer data. Connected building systems, refrigeration equipment and other operational technology are becoming increasingly important components of retail security.

Store strategies remain divided. Boot Barn is increasing its planned store expansion despite lowering its sales outlook, Trader Joe’s announced another Orlando location, and Hungarian fashion label Nanushka has closed all its physical stores amid financial difficulties.

Monday’s stock market finished mixed, with the Dow advancing while technology weakness pulled down the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. Retail stocks, however, delivered a particularly strong session, with 19 of the 23 publicly traded companies on our watchlist finishing higher.

For retailers: technology, physical infrastructure and customer experience are becoming increasingly interconnected. The retailers that can translate those investments into better execution will have an advantage heading into the holiday season.

UNITED STATES: Walmart commits $6 billion to expand distribution center automation

Walmart is significantly expanding its partnership with robotics and automation company Symbotic, committing approximately $6 billion to deploy automation technology across 25 U.S. regional distribution centers.

The expanded agreement, covered by Supply Chain Dive on November 2, builds on a relationship that began more than a decade ago. The technology is designed to improve upstream inventory management, increase storage capacity, accelerate e-commerce fulfillment and improve replenishment throughout Walmart’s supply chain. The agreement also creates opportunities for additional deployment across Walmart’s international operations. Walmart has separately committed $125 million toward research and development of advanced racking, picking and inventory management capabilities.

The investment reinforces Walmart’s strategy of building a more automated supply chain capable of supporting its growing omnichannel business. The company is effectively investing in the infrastructure required to move products more efficiently between distribution centers, stores and customers.

Automation becomes substantially more valuable when it is connected to inventory accuracy, demand forecasting, warehouse management and store-level execution. The objective is not simply moving more boxes with fewer employees. It is creating a supply chain that responds faster to demand while improving product availability and reducing operating costs.

UNITED STATES: Ahold Delhaize USA modernizes POS and self-checkout infrastructure

Ahold Delhaize USA announced November 2 that it is advancing a major modernization initiative using the Voyix Commerce Platform from NCR Voyix.

The initiative covers point-of-sale, self-checkout, pharmacy and fuel operations across its U.S. grocery businesses. The company reported that the new POS technology is already available in 100 stores, with deployment continuing over the next several years. The objective is to establish a more consistent technology foundation while preserving the flexibility needed by individual grocery banners.
